The New Challenge for 2011

Last year when I began this blog and set up the parameters for the challenge, I hoped it would change my life. I realized the impact that one domino has. I desperately wanted something big to come out of setting my goals and achieving them. Knowing my personality though, mostly my propensity to over commit and under deliver, I wanted to make the goal realistic and the focus tangible. I wanted to start at point A and actually arrive at point B without excuses.
2011: I would like to think of this year as "Point B, C, and D"
Point B: Read.
This year I am challenging myself to read 12 books from my own book shelf. Books I already own and haven't read completely or books I should read again.
Examples:
Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God
Mere Christianity (I read this over 10 years ago!)
Get Out of That Pit: Straight Talk about God's Deliverance
Competent to Counsel
The Vanishing Conscience
Etc,. I will be posting all finished texts just like last year, and all of the twelve must be non-fiction, serious texts.
Point C: Research.
Along with reading my way through this year, I want to research the Word of God. I don't want to only read about the Bible in great Christian Living books, but I want to dig into the Bible for myself. Again I am committed to reading it through in a year, and in addition I will be asking more questions, looking up more answers, and seeking to understand it more. So far I have secured a Strong's, and a box full of commentaries, other translations and I'm looking for a Vine's Dictionary - anyone have an extra?
Point D: Write.
As you can see, I love to write. I want to be able to make a living doing what I love. I don't presume to have the knowledge to write something life changing and best-selling, rather, I am just willing to articulate the things I've learned. I don't know how God is going to work out this desire, but I do know I trust him. He will make a way; He is the Way. I'm just a traveler.
Let's walk together.

Challenge Completed

Wow did that title roll off the fingers with ease! I'm so amazed to be writing the end of year post and be able to proclaim - I finished! Now before I bore you with all the sentimentality of the things learned, favorite authors, and other general details - let me get down to business, I have the last books to report!
From Ashes to Beauty: Spiritual Truths for Rebuilding and Revitalizing Your Marriage
Based on the Beatitudes in the gospel of Matthew, Jeff Colon addresses both spouses and admonishes men and women to be biblical in the home. It isn't a book that "defines roles," "explains behavior," or "sympathizes with the reader." Colon focuses on Jesus and the truth of the Bible while encouraging the reader to apply it to their life, to their marriage, and to their faith.
Mocha with Max by Max Lucado, was given to me by a dear friend from Florida (thanks again, Amy!). I started reading it long ago, but because it is such a "pleasure read" (in my categorical system) I put off finishing it for the sake of other "serious Christian Living" books (like the one above :) ). Boy was I wrong, it was very rich with insight, hope, deep biblical truth, scripture, and even sketches. I was edified and uplifted. I needed a break from books saying "be a doer doer doer" and this book helped me to sit down and reflect on "Jesus Jesus Jesus" - the sweetest name I know. It's a beautiful book - you need to read it.
The Cross Centered Life: Keeping the Gospel The Main Thing
I have been recommended this book a number of times by C.J. Mahaney, and just today I saw it on my parents book shelf. I thought, "huh, I can read this one for the '24th book' and still finish today!" So I did. I still have 4-5 unfinished books to tackle and I admit to starting this book new today, but I'm so glad I did. The truth preached in this small book are HUGE: the Gospel! The good news! Back to the motivator of the book Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream by David Platt, I needed to be reminded of how truly life changing (an ongoing life change) the gospel is! Jesus Christ died for my sins! I have been justified freely and there is no condemnation! Also, in this book was amazing end notes for further reading! I can't wait to get my hands on
D.A. Carson's works: The Cross & Christian Ministry: An Exposition of Passages from 1 Corinthians & How Long, O Lord?: Reflections on Suffering and Evil
David Prior's THE MESSAGE OF 1 CORINTHIANS, life in the local church (Bible Speaks Today)
John Stott's The Cross of Christ
Jerry Bridges' The Discipline of Grace: God's Role and Our Role in the Pursuit of Holiness
Charles Spurgeon's Discovering the Power of the Cross of Christ (Christian Living/Classics) (Discovering the Power Series) (Life of Christ Series)
Anybody?
Maybe you'll see those titles on this blog throughout the next year.
I'm still formulating the new challenge that begins tomorrow...check back to find out...for now I just want to say it feels amazing to have fought my way through so many books this past year. I'm not proud of all of them (The Bad Beginning & Very Valentine) but I am extremely honored by others (the Bible!). I still reference many of them, and I will never be the same because I gained discipline. I grew in perseverance. I refined my definition of "entertainment" and I am closer to my ultimate goal in life.
Thank you for reading, commenting, and providing me with accountability. Like I already said, check back for the next big challenge! And please share with me what you're challenging yourself to do this year! I'd love to know.
Peace.

Almost end of year recap: Day 351

The complete a book challenge is almost coming to an end. Day 1: this post started it all. I have a few books to report finished (and I must take a moment to apologize for my long silence - I've had major family issues to attend to - but a day hasn't gone by that I haven't longed to read and write!).
What you missed - I've finished:
Return (Redemption) -- Third book in the Redemption series, and I need to give a major shout to Karen Kingsbury for her artistry in this one! The twists and turns in the characters' lives are amazing. She is truly a gifted author.
Choosing to SEE: A Journey of Struggle and Hope -- Mary Beth Chapman (yes, Steven Curtis Chapman's wife) wrote a memoirs of sort. Starting with her childhood, she takes the reader through not only her pain and loss of their beloved daughter Maria, but it is also her personal journey through life ranging from damaging house fires to deep depressions. She is honest and funny, and you'll definitely feel like a friend of the family in the end.
NKJV The Woman's Study Bible: Second Edition -- The BIBLE!!! I'm so excited to report that I've finished reading through the Bible this year. I've never done this before, and the reward was the challenge. I am blessed to have God's Word, to read it, and to hide it in my heart. I plan on reading it again in 2011, but this year I'll be reading: ESV Study Bible (TruTone, Natural Brown) - I got this for Christmas and I've already been pouring over it! This is an amazing study Bible if you're truly curious about what everything means - this Bible is the b-e-s-t.
So...did I meet my goal? Did I finish the challenge?
Honestly, I hope so. I still have 14 days to go!! I need to read 4 books in 2 weeks. Can I do it? I sure hope so. I'm half way through 6 books right now...(which if you recall in my first post, linked above, this was my original problem = not finishing books!) but even if I don't finish all of these in the next 14 days - I will. I know I will finish. This challenge has changed my life, it did accomplish the intended purpose. I am much more disciplined now than I was 11 months and 2 weeks ago. My life has changed in so many chart-able ways for the better.
One thing that must be said is, I know Jesus better. I know His Spirit's movement in my life. I have been led into walking closer with Him. Every morning I woke up rain or shine and read His word and from their I just kept reading and doing, and seeing small steps of completion through one book after another was enough of a motivator to keep going, to keep pressing on. It helps that I have a love for knowledge and my heart longs for wisdom - those two desires helped me dig through some of the more challenging books of the year. Turning the TV off and opening up a good fiction book actually helped to relax my mind.
As a recap, what may have been a very lonely year was actually a very profitable year for me personally. I invested in my mind and grew in integrity and in discipline. It may be appropriate to also say that I couldn't have done any of this without Jesus. He has been tested and found faithful to me, and He is the reason I can do anything - His grace is completely sufficient. I am so grateful for the things learned this past year.
Soon I will post the new challenge for 2011 - I hope you didn't think this blog was for this year only - please keep reading, and commenting, and challenging yourself! Let's make 2011 a year where we share even more!

Day 274

Finished book 1 for October, and because of this book I have started a new one-year challenge. This blog was inspired because of a challenge to do something valuable - finish the things that I start, namely books. This new one-year challenge is "My Radical Experiment." Let me explain:
I finished Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream by David Platt. The emphasis of this book is understanding and obeying the gospel and the commands of Jesus. The author draws the attention of the reader to how our Christian culture is in danger of making me the object. Am I really the object of the gospel? Can I sing "Jesus Loves Me" to my children and leave their understanding of God at that? No, I would have to say I cannot. Jesus does love me and my children, but the gospel is about God - His ways, His salvation, His glory, and His greatness.
Platt also draws to the readers attention the major mistake of thinking that some portions of Jesus' commands are only for those who are "called" to missions.
But where in the Bible is missions ever identified as an optional program in the church? We have just seen that we were all created by God, saved from our sins, and blessed by God to make his glory known in all the world. Indeed, Jesus himself has not merely called us to go to all nations; he has created us and commanded us to go to all nations. We have taken this command, though, and reduced it to a calling - something that only a few people receive...Now we know that each of us has different gifts, different skills, different passions, and different callings from God...Peter and Paul had different callings (Platt 72-73).
Later in the book Platt presents the "My Radical Experiment" where he asks each reader to test the claims of the gospel for one year. Before you think that he is charging each reader to go into full-time foreign missions, let me say that having read it cover to cover - he does not. He does however challenge each believer in Jesus to begin thinking globally, pray for all nations, pray for laborers to go, and be involved however possible with sacrificing for other people in nations without the gospel. He proposes that we spend 2% of our year in another context. Get out of your comfortable surroundings for 2% of the year just may change how you spend your time and resources in the other 98% of your time at "home."
Please take a minute and read this blog about living radically: THINKonline: getting-too-radical
And then tell me what you think - please - I crave some other thoughts on this.
Thanks for reading!
